21. Stop Chasing Every Opportunity: Why Mastering One Thing Builds a Better Business

share

Have you ever wondered if you’re focusing on the wrong business instead of growing the one you already have?

Do you find yourself constantly chasing the next opportunity, strategy, or business idea but never feeling like you’re making real progress?

What if the biggest thing holding your contractor business back isn’t your talent, but your lack of long-term focus?

Episode Highlights

In this episode of Building Better Contractor Businesses, Shaytoya shares one of the biggest lessons she’s learned after more than 12 years in the construction industry: success doesn’t come from chasing every opportunity; it comes from mastering one thing.

After trying insurance, marketing, travel, and several other business opportunities, Shaytoya realized that construction wasn’t just her husband’s business anymore; it had become her expertise, too. That realization changed the way she approached business growth.

You’ll learn why every industry has challenges, why the “grass is always greener” mindset can keep contractors stuck, and why consistency often beats constantly changing strategies. We also discuss how building on what you already know creates stronger business systems, improves your workflow, and leads to a more profitable contractor business over time.

If you’ve been distracted by the next shiny object or wondering whether you should change directions, this episode will help you refocus on what you’ve already spent years building.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • Every business has challenges, even the ones that look successful.
  • How consistency creates stronger business systems and better long-term results.
  • Improving your workflow starts with committing to one direction.
  • How mastering one skill can increase your profitability and business opportunities.
  • Why is becoming known for one thing more valuable than chasing multiple businesses?
  • A simple exercise to help you identify what’s distracting you from long-term success.

Speaker:

Have you ever found yourself thinking, maybe I should start another business?

2

:

Maybe I should try a different marketing strategy?

3

:

Maybe I should get into real estate.

4

:

As entrepreneurs, people who are very motivated, we're constantly surrounded by new

opportunities, social media that makes it seem like everyone is on to the next best thing.

5

:

But what if the reason why you are not yet successful in your

6

:

Contracting business is because you have not yet stayed committed to something long

enough.

7

:

Today I'm speaking about the importance of why mastering one thing can completely change

your business in your life.

8

:

Hey, I'm Shay Toya.

9

:

I've spent more than 10 years in construction, working behind the scenes in marketing,

hiring, and I've seen how overwhelming it can be to grow a business.

10

:

That's how we've learned to build a sustainable business using clear systems, strong

communication, and intentional recruiting.

11

:

If you're ready for better hiring, smarter remarketing, and a business that doesn't fall

apart when you step away, welcome to building better contractor businesses.

12

:

So, one thing that I have noticed from the years of being in business is that it's super

easy to become distracted.

13

:

Everywhere we look, there's someone speaking about.

14

:

Another opportunity.

15

:

Start this business.

16

:

Buy real estate.

17

:

Learn to trade.

18

:

Start a YouTube channel.

19

:

That's another thing throughout the years that I've heard.

20

:

Now with AI, we hear about use AI.

21

:

The list never ends.

22

:

And as technology grows, the list will continue to grow as well.

23

:

As entrepreneurs, we naturally love ideas.

24

:

We are visionaries because we are wired that way.

25

:

But sometimes

26

:

Our biggest strengths become our biggest weaknesses.

27

:

Because of being consistent in one thing, we become average at 10.

28

:

So this episode actually came to the idea by attending a networking event.

29

:

And this networking event, there was a young woman who was probably around the age of 25

and who was asking, you know, we were sitting in a circle and she was asking everyone,

30

:

what should she do?

31

:

She told us.

32

:

She is great at creating content and content that goes viral and that's super trending.

33

:

But she wasn't sure if she should continue doing that or if she should try something else.

34

:

Without hesitation, I told her, do that.

35

:

Become the absolute best at social media.

36

:

Don't spend the next five years chasing different careers.

37

:

Spin the next five years becoming known for one thing.

38

:

thing the conversation really stuck with me because honestly I've been feeling super

guilty myself.

39

:

For years I've always thought of KB communications as Kevin's business.

40

:

I love helping Kevin.

41

:

I love being involved.

42

:

But down deep I always thought I need something that's mine.

43

:

So over years I've tried many different things.

44

:

I've sold insurance

45

:

I took on marketing clients.

46

:

I became a travel agent.

47

:

I also became a tax advisor.

48

:

I've explored so many different business ideas.

49

:

Every time I thought maybe this is the one.

50

:

It's what I'm supposed to do.

51

:

But eventually I had to be super honest with myself.

52

:

Construction.

53

:

Working with contractors.

54

:

Helping business owners, building relationships, marketing.

55

:

That's actually my lane.

56

:

Within construction.

57

:

I've been doing this for years and to say it 12 years to be exact.

58

:

When I really stopped and thought about it, I realized this wasn't just Kevin's business

anymore.

59

:

It had become my expertise too.

60

:

And Kevin has experienced this too.

61

:

During COVID, he spent a lot of time learning how to trade because that's the thing that

everyone told him he should do.

62

:

Like many entrepreneurs, he enjoys learning new skills and getting new ideas.

63

:

There is nothing wrong with exploring.

64

:

But eventually you personally have to ask yourself, what's the one thing that deserves

most of my time?

65

:

So when it comes to deciding what direction you want to go in your business, if it's

construction, if it's real estate, if it's marketing, whatever direction you decide to go

66

:

in your business.

67

:

For you to understand lesson one, every business is going to have problems.

68

:

Here's something I've learned.

69

:

Every new opportunity looks super exciting in the beginning.

70

:

It's super fresh.

71

:

It's different.

72

:

You know, you're at that time, you're learning something new.

73

:

And at that time, you imagine everything going right.

74

:

But unfortunately, there comes a time where that excitement fades and it's not exciting

anymore.

75

:

It's not new anymore.

76

:

Then it becomes work.

77

:

So no matter, no matter, no matter the career that you decide, at the beginning, it's

wonderful.

78

:

When I was doing insurance, insurance has challenges.

79

:

Marketing has challenges.

80

:

Travel.

81

:

We I love the travel.

82

:

That even had challenges.

83

:

Construction has a lot of challenges.

84

:

Real estate, guys.

85

:

Talk to real estate agents right now, they may say it's slow.

86

:

Every business has struggles.

87

:

Every business, you may struggle.

88

:

Sometimes, you know, we look at other people's success and think, maybe I should be doing

that instead.

89

:

But what we do not see of the years, we don't see behind the scenes.

90

:

We don't see the years of struggled.

91

:

We don't see that for years they didn't make any money.

92

:

And when it comes to social media, we're seeing the highlights.

93

:

You don't see every mistake that they've made.

94

:

Most people don't talk about it.

95

:

You don't see when they're stressed.

96

:

And then we do not see the boring work.

97

:

We don't see the things that they're doing on a consistent basis.

98

:

What they do every day, every single day.

99

:

The grass always looks greener from the outside.

100

:

But once you're in business every day, your business has weeds.

101

:

Your business has issues.

102

:

Successful people don't keep jumping fences that look for greener grass.

103

:

They water the grass and continue standing on it consistently.

104

:

Lesson number two.

105

:

Sometimes you have to understand you already have the right plan.

106

:

And so we've experienced this with K and B communications.

107

:

Over the years, we've hired marketing companies, we've worked with coaches.

108

:

I've watched YouTube videos.

109

:

We're like, oh, that's something that I need to do.

110

:

We've changed strategies because someone convinced us there was a faster way.

111

:

Some of those things do help and some of those things do not help.

112

:

But looking back, a lot of times we were already on the right track.

113

:

We just hadn't stayed consistent long enough.

114

:

Or if it's not that we weren't being consistent long enough, it was because we weren't

doing enough of it.

115

:

Sometimes success isn't about finding a better strategy.

116

:

Sometimes it's about continuing doing the right things over and over and over again.

117

:

Doing it longer, more consistently.

118

:

Instead of networking once a month, you made it me need to do it more.

119

:

Network every week consistently.

120

:

Instead of posting once in a while or when you think about it, create it consistently.

121

:

You know, instead of following up once in a while, as I'm saying, do it more.

122

:

Keep following up.

123

:

Most businesses don't fail because they had bad ideas.

124

:

They failed because they quit too soon.

125

:

I know most of us have had heard the story.

126

:

If you've read a lot of motivated books, you've heard so many stories about where they're

so close to their their goals.

127

:

They're so close to actually becoming successful.

128

:

I believe it's called Three Feet from Gold within a couple books that I've read.

129

:

And they were just so, so close.

130

:

So, lesson number three, build what you already know.

131

:

So there's one conversation that's always stuck with me.

132

:

Last year, we had a financial advisor.

133

:

And with our financial advisor, we were talking to them about different businesses that we

could invest into.

134

:

And his advice was super simple.

135

:

He said it's much easier.

136

:

To build from something you already know.

137

:

He's like, expand the business you're already running.

138

:

Buy another business that's similar.

139

:

Add a service that makes sense.

140

:

Build onto your experiences.

141

:

Every time you start something new, you are starting from zero.

142

:

You are having to learn something new.

143

:

You are having to learn a new industry.

144

:

You're having to build new relationships and earn new trust.

145

:

So why throw away

146

:

years of experience if you don't have to.

147

:

Lesson number four.

148

:

Become the expert in one thing.

149

:

When people need help, what do you want them to think?

150

:

You want them to think of you.

151

:

When someone needs help, you want them to see you as the expert in what you offer.

152

:

So if you're a, I don't know, I'm afraid that's a real estate agent.

153

:

If you're a real estate agent, if I know someone who needs to buy a house, I am

154

:

Connecting them to her because she's an expert in that one thing.

155

:

And so you want people to know of you as that expert, kind of like they'd be silly not to

do business with you.

156

:

And that's only possible if you've stayed in your lane long enough to become known.

157

:

Experts earn trust, experts earn referrals, experts earn better opportunities.

158

:

And then also experts usually make more money because people value experience.

159

:

If you think of a doctor who specializes, a lot of times those doctors make more money

too.

160

:

And so this does not happen overnight.

161

:

It happens over years of showing up, speaking about consistently the same thing.

162

:

So lesson number five.

163

:

Stop multitasking.

164

:

I say this often.

165

:

We all think we are a great multitasker, but the truth is you're not.

166

:

I am not.

167

:

I try, but I'm not.

168

:

When you have to switch back and forth to different things.

169

:

We're simply switching our attention back and forth.

170

:

Every time we switch, you lose focus.

171

:

Imagine what could happen if you put all of your energy into one thing, one business, one

mission, one goal.

172

:

How much further ahead would you be five years from now if you just stayed focused on one

thing?

173

:

I would also like to add, you know, I've had friends who say they

174

:

Are super creative, which is awesome, who say they're they want to do multiple different

things.

175

:

But the thing is, you have to first become an expert in that one thing.

176

:

You first have to have the opportunity to make real money before you get into a new

business, a new opportunity, a new strategy.

177

:

Once you actually have money in the bank, things become a lot easier.

178

:

So I do have a book recommendation.

179

:

That this book had actually changed my mind on a lot of things years, years ago.

180

:

If you've never read it, I do recommend it.

181

:

It's called The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papison.

182

:

And so one of my favorite questions from the book is: What's the one thing I can do such

that everything else becomes easier or unnecessary?

183

:

That's a question every business owner should ask themselves regularly.

184

:

So this week.

185

:

I want you to do something super simple.

186

:

Grab a piece of paper, write down every opportunity you are currently chasing, every side

hustle, every business idea, every project, every distraction, then ask yourself, which

187

:

one is the most important?

188

:

Where should I be paying my full attention to?

189

:

What's the one thing that I've been doing for years?

190

:

Building.

191

:

And for me, that was being in the construction industry, and that's why I decided to go

the direction with this podcast.

192

:

And what would happen if I committed to it for another five years instead of chasing

something new?

193

:

Because that is what I've learned.

194

:

Success isn't about doing everything.

195

:

Success is about doing one thing exceptionally well.

196

:

The opportunities will always be there.

197

:

The distractions will always be there.

198

:

The next shiny object will always be there.

199

:

But the people who build incredible businesses are usually the ones who stay committed.

200

:

The longest while everyone else gets distracted.

201

:

So, what's the one thing you're going to commit through to over the next year?

202

:

Remember, sometimes the answer isn't something different, but it's something that you're

already working towards.

203

:

Just keep going and let's continue building a better contractor business.

204

:

If you believe that this episode

205

:

Brought you real clarity, be sure to share it with another contractor who also needs it.

206

:

And if you want to keep this conversation going, be sure to join our community of

contractors inside Building Better Contractor Businesses.

207

208

:

This is a community where we talk through the real problems.

209

:

210

:

The link will be found in our show notes.

211

:

businesses.
